I'm scared! LOL
Seriously, I went down for a look-see today and really liked how friendly everyone is... But I'm totally intimidated by the machines and weights and stuff and have no clue where or how to start so I've contacted one of the PTs who goes to the gym with his clients and hoping to meet up with him next week to come up with some sort of plan.

When I first started going to the gym I stayed so far away from the weight room! But now I even use the treadmill in the corner of that room rather that the bank of them in the cardio room! People really do tend to focus on themselves in the gym... if im honest my eye will wonder to some eye candy now and again but thats about it. I'm pretty sure most of the time people don't even know i'm there! Don't worry about the meatheads, they are often too engrossed by what they see in the mirrors hehe Once you've been shown how to use the equipment you'll be absolutely fine i'm sure! Two things that you should keep in mind... by doing sort bursts of really high intensity followed by a rest period you will do FAR more fat damage than running constantly for x amount of minutes (this is true with all cardio) and as a woman you won't "bulk up" by doing weights but you will tone up and increase your metabolism. Enjoy it! I keep putting it off which is REALLY naughty because after a few weeks i'm out of the habit of going silly me!

Thanks hun! I went again yesterday and did a little bit... I also am going to see a PT there next week who is going to come up with a plan and show me how to do things once a week.
I intend to go 3x a week to workout... I've been twice this week so far. Hoping I can keep it up!

Apparently once you've dragged yourself there for three weeks in a row it becomes habit... apparently haha

Well done Spacecucumber!
I have always wanted to start weight lifting! Do not be put off, lifting weights is the best exercise to shape your body and build muscle. The more muscle you have, the easier it is to lose weight and maintain as it raises your metabolism.
Once I get closer to goal, I am going to hire a PT to show me the ropes in the weight room.

I do a barbell workout DVD and lifting weights always helps me to tone up quickly and easily. I quite enjoy it. I only use 2.5kg hand weights and 2.5kg on each end of my barbell and I lose and tone up well, so it's not even heavy what I do. I tried to use a gym but I didn't like the main trainer in there (she was a real ignorant woman!) so I left and prefer to do it all alone now, my DVD is great.
For me a barbell or weight workout by far the best, as well as working away on my cross trainer for my legs. I use ankle weights too when I use that.
Well done on getting in there SpaceCucumber!
